Shelter More,

Prevent More

Capital Campaign

Our campaign to shelter 30 more unhoused families and prevent homelessness for 70 more housing insecure families every year.

Hope Starts Here

Homelessness – one of the most significant challenges of our time. The “Shelter More, Prevent More” Capital Campaign reflects our bold plan to serve more families facing homelessness than ever before by scaling up our Homelessness Prevention and Transitional Housing Programs.

We are ambitiously setting out to open a fifth shelter that will serve a record number of 20 unhoused families – this new facility will not only provide essential housing but also serve as a beacon of hope and stability for those facing uncertain times.

Join us… hope starts with you.

2-Pronged Approach - Shelter & Prevent

Door of Hope Board Chair Tyler Lazarian, Former CEO of Union Rescue Mission Andy Bales, and Door of Hope Chief Executive Officer Megan Katerjian, share the vision and plan of “Shelter More, Prevent More.”

A Growing Need

Over 3,500 families
and over 6,200 children
are experiencing
homelessness
in Los Angeles.

The homelessness crisis continues to be an urgent, pressing issue that demands our attention.

The 2024 Los Angeles Homeless Count revealed startling statistics. There are 75,312 unhoused individuals in LA County, including 3,520 families, and 6,201 children experiencing homelessness.

Shockingly, family homelessness has risen by 5% in LA County, 8% in Glendale, and a staggering 46% in Pasadena. Leading reasons for this increase in family homelessness are economic hardships, lack of affordable housing, and a 180% surge in women fleeing domestic violence in Pasadena.

We must respond.

Our Plan

Given our experience, track record and results, we want to do more. Our plan is to: create a new shelter to house 20 families and prevent homelessness before it starts with increased funding for our Prevention Program.

Our vision for this fifth shelter is the culmination of all the wisdom and experience we’ve gained from our four previous shelters. It will also stand as our most efficient and impactful endeavor yet, maximizing both our resources and our reach.

Our Story

Forty years ago...

four community leaders, Steve and Iris Lazarian and John and Vera Mae Perkins, sat in a small garage in Northwest Pasadena and dreamt of ways to partner with their neighbors facing economic hardship. Moved by the severe poverty they witnessed, they thoughtfully and compassionately responded, and Door of Hope was born.

Two years ago...

the Door of Hope Board sat around a table and considered the ever growing number of families facing homelessness in Pasadena and dreamt of ways to scale up the Prevention and Transitional Housing Programs. After much prayer and conversation, the plan to open a new shelter that would house more families than ever before was born.

Our 5th shelter is the result of our Board of Directors’ vision that there will be a day when no child or family will experience homelessness in our community.
