Single Mothers, Single Fathers, and Two Parent Families
The Los Robles location is Door of Hope’s flagship site. Founded in 1985, the Los Robles site has been a beacon of hope and a place of transformation for hundreds of families and children experiencing homelessness from throughout the greater Los Angeles area and beyond.
The house is over 120 years old, and is nestled on the southwest corner of Orange Grove Blvd and Los Robles Ave in Pasadena, California. It’s not what you would expect a homeless shelter to look like. Instead of the institutionalized exterior with rows of hospital like bunk beds, the Los Robles site it a beautiful old craftsman house, complete with a white picket fence and a large oak tree in the front yard. Families who are suffering feel right at home the moment they enter the doors. The Los Robles site can accommodate 5 families inside the house, and an additional 3 families in the apartments right behind the main house.
Families staying in the main house all have their own independent rooms with beds, dressers, and everything else needed to feel right at home as they work to rebuild their lives. The house has a large kitchen, and 4 bathrooms that are shared by families inside the house. The back apartments are fully functioning and have their own bathrooms and kitchens. The facility also features a dedicated laundry room, an after-school program room for the kids, a playground, and a dedicated counseling office. The Los Robles site epitomizes the essence of Door of Hope. It has evolved over the years to meet the need in the community. It started as a home for just two-parent families, and has adjusted to now serve single fathers and single mothers as well. The back apartments were added in the early 2000’s to accommodate more families as the need for places grew.
