Equipping Homeless Families to Rebuild Their Lives

THE DOOR OF HOPE MISSION

Door of Hope's mission statement is to "Equip Homeless Families to Rebuild Their Lives." The emphasis is on the word “equip.” Door of Hope is not a Band-Aid, we are an organization that transforms the lives of families and children but by equipping them with the skills necessary to maintain long term success. Our goal is to break the cycle of homelessness with every family that enters our program.

  • EMPOWER

We empower the families we serve to emotionally, psychologically, and physically, to take control of their lives and build a better future for themselves and their children.

  • EQUIP

By providing case management, counseling, life skills classes, and much more, we equip our families with tools necessary for them to rebuild their lives.

  • TRANSFORM

Most families enter our doors broken and hurting, but by empowering, equipping every family that has come entered the program, hundreds of lives have been transformed.

How it all began

DOOR OF HOPE HISTORY

Door of Hope was founded in 1985 by Steve and Iris Lazarian. Steve and Iris were members of Lake Avenue Church who had a huge heart for homelessness and spent many hours volunteering their time and resources to help those in need. In 1985, when a two-parent family became homeless, they would be split up, as there was no one equipped to serve the entire family unit. Most of the time, the father would go one way, and the mother and kid(s) would go elsewhere. Steve and Iris saw the heartbreak families being torn apart time and time again and wanted to do something about it. While driving up Los Robles Ave in Pasadena, CA, they ran across an old dilapidated house for sale. They decided to buy it and found Door of Hope, and the rest is history.

OUR HOMES

Vision for the future

Door of Hope has experienced remarkable growth since it’s founding in 1985. It has gone from serving 5 families every 2 years, to 67 families in 2015. Door of Hope’s growth has never come from a place of personal or organizational ambition. Door of Hope’s growth has come from a commitment to meet the need of the community around us and to be a place of refuge for families who are broken and in need of help. When we look to the future, it is that same concept that guides us. On the streets of Los Angeles, there are thousands of families and children living in homelessness with no real hope for the future. We are committed to doing all we can to end family homelessness with the help of our donors, supporters, and volunteers.
